Anniversary service for first women priests

Bishop Rose will be presiding over a special service led by women clergy within our diocese to celebrate and reflect on the 30th anniversary of the ordination of women to priesthood.

The service will be open to everyone and held on Saturday 11 May at 10:30am, with all ordained women in our diocese invited to wear their robes and process.

On 7 May 1994 the first women in our diocese were ordained priest by the Archbishop of 兔子先生 at the time, Dr George Carey.

Speaking ahead of the service, Bishop Rose said: “I want to encourage women in ministry and those who are in discernment, firstly to remember who called them. It is God who called them. It is God, the Holy Spirit, that plants the seed in us, and then for us to be faithful.”

Diocesan Adviser for Women’s Ministry, will be preaching at the service. She said: “It is really important that we celebrate everything that has been achieved in enabling women’s priestly ministry in the last 30 years and so first and foremost the service is here to celebrate that.

“But we are very mindful that the journey towards equality is still a tough one; it hasn’t been easy for everybody, and there is still work that needs to be done. Therefore, the service will also recognise this.”
